Coming out with great style
Wentworth came out in 2013 when he wrote a letter declining an invitation to attend the Saint Petersburg International Film Festival due to the Russian anti-LGBT law. The message was a bold stance in support of the LGBT Russians, who were facing violence and persecution.
Wentworth wrote in the letter:
He wants to turn his distress to help others
Wentworth knew he was gay since childhood. He was afraid to admit to the public and only the closest family and friends knew about his orientation. After years, he admitted that he was afraid of a public admission and subsequent influence on his acting career. In 2013, in open speech, he also admitted to having attempted suicide several times. His speech was met with appreciation by the public and, in particular, by the LGBT community.
In October 2016, Charity for Mental Health Active Minds announced that Wentworth Miller would be their ambassador to support people with the similar fate.
